The Vegan Coast to Coast Challenge -
raising money for St Francis Animal Shelter

The indomitable Ben Mills and Gemma Miller will be walking 190 miles from Robin Hood's Bay on the East coast of Britain to St. Bee's Head on the West starting on May 24th 2008 to raise money for the St Francis Animal Welfare Centre.

They are both vegans and need sponsors for their trek. Every penny raised will go directly to St. Francis Animal Welfare and enable them to care for many sick, injured or unwanted animals in need of help.

Barb's trip to Mahaguthi, Nepal

...I visited Mahaguthi in June 2007 with my daughter Lily and we had a wonderful time. Our first taste of Nepal was getting a visa at Kathmandu airport. The immigration officers were smiley and friendly and I immediately felt relaxed. Later I learnt that Nepalis are slow to anger and quick to smile, a wonderful and refreshing change in today’s overstressed and time-harried world. What could be nicer than their greeting ‘Namaste’ – I greet the divine within you?...Read more >

Barb's trip to Uganda

The plane touched down at Entebbe at 5.30 am. It was still dark. I hoped Olive Muwagga from NAWOU would remember to meet me and, as I walked out of the airport I looked round, nothing happened for a few seconds and then a cheerful, smiley person raised a note with my name on. We both burst out laughing - apparently I didn't look anything like my photo. Read more >

News from Nepal

Dear Barb,

A Good News Indeed!!!

King Gyanendra has addressed to Nation last night and reinstated the House of Representatives which was dissolved on 22 May. Finally he accepted the people's movement and strength. He called SPA to bear the responsibility to take the nation on the way of permanant peace and stability.

Thousands of people came to the street after King announcement, and participated in victory rally in the middle of the night, some with tears of happiness and some with feeling of victory. Today, the environment is cheerful and people are happy. A big demonstration is going to happen today for democracy. A new excitement and trust towards the better future.

Thanking you so much for all the care, concern, cooperation and love. Besides thanks a lot for your feedbacks regarding the products. I have not got chance to look at the photo gallery in website. Will you please send me the address of that photo.

warmly, Sonali

News from Nepal

Mahaguthi producers are facing a tough time with the current unrest. Many cannot get to work and so production is difficult, this hampers the group's business and individuals' income.

Many services have been disrupted and the price of many commodities has rocketed.

We hope peace will soon be restored.

Hi Barbara - Greetings from Bombolulu Workshops, Kenya

We would like to share some good news on Bombolulu with you. Our jewellery workshop which accomodates most of our artisans received a major facelift through our donor from Germany, Peter Zimmerman. The workshop which was designed to accomodate only 20 artisans had become congested due to the increase of the workforce to almost 60 artisans.

The expansion of the workshop has improved the working atmosphere which has directly translated into increased output. The refurbishment of the workshop took five months to complete at a tune of kshs 3.6 million. It was officially reopened on November 5, 2005 by Hon. Consul of the Federal Republic of Germany, Mr Sadiq Ghalia.

Barb's trip to India

My time at NEED (Network of Economic and Entrepreneurial Development) was an inspiring one. Having travelled 1,000 miles from Andra Pradesh, I was shocked by how much poorer the north looked than the centre. Indeed, 10% of the world's poor live in this region.. Read more >
